"For Such a Time as This": 3 Lessons From Queen Esther

A short devotional on courage, prayer and purpose.

The Book of Esther is one of the most unusual books in the Bible. God's name never appears in it, yet His hand is visible on every page. It tells the story of a young orphan who became queen of Persia and, at the moment it mattered most, found the courage to speak up for her people.

For centuries, readers have returned to Esther in seasons of uncertainty. Here are three lessons from her story that still speak today.

1. Your place is not an accident

When Esther hesitated to approach the king, her cousin Mordecai reminded her that she may have been brought to her position for a reason.

"And who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?"Esther 4:14 (ESV)

Many of us feel stuck where we are: in a job, a city, a hard season. Esther's story invites a different question: not "Why am I here?" but "What might I be here for?"

2. Prepare in prayer before you act

Before taking her biggest step, Esther did not rush. She asked her community to fast and pray with her for three days. Only then did she go before the king.

It's a simple pattern, but a powerful one: quiet the noise, seek God, then move with clarity instead of fear.

3. Courage often looks like one small step

"If I perish, I perish," Esther said (Esther 4:16). Her courage wasn't the absence of fear. It was a decision to take the next right step anyway. She didn't fix everything in one day; she started with an invitation to dinner.
